Literacy at Aldercourt Primary
At Aldercourt Primary School, we recognise the essential role of Literacy in supporting all areas of learning. We use evidence-based approaches to ensure every student develops strong reading and writing skills.
Prep – Year 2 Literacy at APS
In Prep to Year 2, we use the Little Learners Love Literacy program to build strong foundations in reading, writing, and spelling. This evidence-based approach teaches children how to decode words using explicit, systematic phonics instruction.
Students develop confidence as they progress through decodable texts, engaging in fun, hands-on activities that reinforce their learning. This program ensures every child builds the essential skills they need to become a confident, independent reader and writer.
Year 3–6 Literacy at APS
In Years 3 to 6, our structured literacy approach focuses on developing critical thinking, comprehension, and writing skills. Students engage in novel studies, exploring rich texts that challenge their understanding and inspire thoughtful discussion.
To strengthen spelling and vocabulary, we use Spelling Mastery, while the Writer's Notebook encourages creativity and self-expression. This personal writing space allows students to explore ideas, draft stories, and reflect on their learning, fostering a love for writing while building essential skills.
Writing at APS
At Aldercourt Primary School, we foster a love for creativity and self-expression through our engaging writing program. Students develop their skills across three key areas:
Language for Interacting with Others
Students explore how language changes depending on relationships, social settings, purpose, and audience. They learn to express personal and social identity while communicating effectively in different contexts.
Text Structure and Organisation
Students discover how texts are structured to suit different audiences and purposes. They explore the techniques authors use to guide and influence readers through well-crafted words, sentences, and extended texts.
Language for Expressing and Developing Ideas
Students build their writing skills by mastering a variety of clause structures, word groups, and multimodal elements, such as sound, image, and layout. They expand their vocabulary and learn to choose words that fit the context and purpose of their writing.
Through these approaches, students develop into confident, creative writers, ready to share their ideas with the world.
Celebrating Reading Nights at APS
At Aldercourt Primary School, we celebrate students' reading achievements with milestones at 25, 50, 100, and 200 nights of reading.
This initiative encourages students and families to engage in regular reading at home. Those who reach the impressive 200-night milestone are rewarded with a special pizza party at the end of the year.
By fostering a love for reading, we aim to build literacy skills, develop lifelong learners, and create a strong reading culture within our school community. Keep reading and celebrating success!
